Caucasian Only Scholarship: Who Cares?

Found this interesting article in the local newspaper.
The Florida State University Chapter of College Republicans is offering a Caucasian Only Scholarship. The scholarship is open to all current FSU students who have at least a 75-percent-Caucasian heritage and a 2.0 grade-point average. The scholarship pays $25. It’s a gimmick to promote a lecture by Reggie Jones, a black conservative. But even if it was real, why should it bother me?

Right when you think the closed minded ignorant racist is becoming a thing of the past, he somehow finds a way to rear his ugly head, slapping you right back into reality. If you have not heard about the Michael Richards tirade, search YouTube (I refuse to link to it). Though it disturbs me that one of my favorite Seinfeld characters would do something so despicable, what intrigues me the most are the people arguing a “double standard”. Check out the Digg post, the most dugg comments are the ones talking about a double standard, so I assume a lot of people agree.

Funny how rap albums calling African Americans exactly the same thing are on the top of the best selling albums lists. Double-standards?

While it’s clear he’s got some issues.. I find it quite a double standard that it’s ok for blacks to be racist with comedy, but if a white person says something racist, it’s not ok and he should apologize..
Now to be completely fair a lot factors play into the promotion of Digg comments, timing is a big one, but this is something still worth discussing.
